One of my freinds is starting a company for parties. They have two saturdays booked at the Glas Kat, then I think they are moving to the DNA lounge.

Its sponsored by 92.7 or whatever that new dance radio station is.

They want performers and DJ's. Jeff is really interested in fire performers (although I'm not sure how that will fly with the venues they have lined up). They are, or course, going to pay for the services, so it would be a great opportunity to get your name out there and put a few bucks in your pockets.

I'm pretty sure you will have to audition.

Circles of Light video/website update

Hello friends of Coven,
Two pieces of good news to share...

1) Each year, the Home of Poi (a fire arts org in New Zealand) hosts a "Circles of Light" fire-spinning video competition in which they ask people from all over the world to submit 4-minute length videos of them or their troupe presenting a fire dancing routine. Ultimately, around 25 video clips are selected and compiled on a DVD that is sold and distributed around the world.

Back in June, I submitted a segment of the video Coven projects during our live performance (it was the poi duet segment) to the competition, and.... I am happy to say that it was selected to be included on the "Circles of Light #5" DVD!

Copies should go on sale this week.

There is also up-to-date info regarding Leticia and I's fire-dancing classes at Cell Space if you are interested in learning to spin!
In general, though, I just wanted to let you know that the website has been update and that I will be continuing to update and improve it, so I encourage you all to visit once and awhile to see what's up!

Mohave Madness

Hello fire friends & fiends,

As some of you know, the Coven just performed a magickal cyrstal-cleansing fire/water ritual out in the Mohave desert last weeked at the Mistress of Evil Luna.tic psytrance event. It was an amazing weekend under the abundant lite of the Harvest full moon. A highlight for all was one of the most glorious skies many of us had ever seen, with the full moon setting in the west while the sun rose in the east and ignited the sky with all the colors of the spectrum- AMAZING!
The ritual also I feel was effective in its magik. As a troupe, we collectively put out the intention before the ceremony to have the ritual act as a centering experience for the people attending the event and, from what individuals have shared with me, it sounds like it did acheive this effect for many. It was also amazing to have the sun come up after performing a crystal-cleansing-charging ceremony only to discover that practically ever stone on the ground was some sort of sparkly, beautiful quartz crystal! Trent also discovered an abandoned mineshaft harboring a snakeskin within its depths (that John Paul valiently fished out with my staff, some rusty wire, and sage brush!), and even more beautiful, and some rare, crystals. In fact, the rattlesnakes were everywhere around us, rattling their tales to the beat!

These, along with countless synchronicities and connections that came up in conversations and thoughts, were some of the magickal elements of this magickal weekend! I would like to thank Chris, John-Paul, Emma, and Trent for venturing out with Leticia and I into the desertous unknown to add their special energy to the ritual.

I'd also like to thank CAM in advance for providing us with images from the ritual which I will post on this tribe when I receive them (for a taste, check out the pic that CAM posted in the photo album). It is also on our agenda to revamp the Coven website.... if anyone would like to offer their services with such a project for trade or for the love of fire please let me know!

Lastly, I'd like to thank the Mistresses for organzing such an amazing event and to Xyla, Horror Place, Penta, Zul, Kaiko, and the Fractal Cowboys for providing an insane soundtrack to an insanely beautiful event. It's a wonder what can happen when u get a bunch of crazee magician/faerie/witch/matutero freaks together in the desert on the full moon, no?

The Art of Fire Dancing (poi)
Instructor: KFire
Experience the beautiful and exhilirating art of spinning fire! In
this class you will learn the foundational movements for spinning poi (fire chains), along with becoming knowledgable in fuels and fire safety procedures. Each student will have the opportunity to spin actual fire in the final class!

Class size: 6-8
Thursdays, 7:00-8:30pm
The class runs from October 13th to November 17th

Bio for KFire
Kara Voss, aka KFire, fell in love with the art of fire spinning on a
beach in Big Sur in 2002 and has been obsessed with the firey arts
ever since. In addition to fire poi, she is skilled in fire fingers,
staff, fire eating and body contact. She performs regularly with her troupe, Coven Fire Troupe (www.covenfiretroupe.com), along with other Bay Area fire troupes. In both her teaching and her peformance, she seeks to familiarize and connect people to the powerful and ancient force of the fire element.

The video is a compressed Quicktime movie of the large-scale DVD projections Coven uses during their live performance. The projections present a mirrored and distorted version of the actions of the performers on stage. Their use in live performance contributes to an overall visual creation of a constantly morphing fire-and-performer kaleidescope which highlights and magnifies the hypnotic character of the fire element.

The new pix are from two recent performances: at the Mindshare II outdoor festival in the forests near Mount Shasta on May 7th , and at the Lucid Dream Lounge at the Liminal Gallery in Oakland on June 4th.

The Mindshare II Festival was put on by the mavens of Mistress of Evil records, and featured some of the premier musical wizards of the San Francisco and international underground dark psychedelic trance scene. The performance happened on a dark and stormy dance floor in temperatures of around 50? F. Who says that fire and water don?t mix! The Lucid Dream Lounge dark masquerade cabaret speakeasy was presented by members of Circo Mutante and SPAZ, and offered a dizzying array of the diversly freaky talents of local cirucus and performance artists. KFire performed an act with fire fingers incorporating dance, eating, and body contact, and Leticia exhibited her grace and skill with the fire poi.

Thank you to Chris Dunn, Curtis Finger, and Guillermo Alarcon for their participation in the creation and distribution of these visual pieces, and to Mistress of Evil records, Breanna, White Rabbit and others of the Circo Mutante and SPAZ crews for hosting the fabulous events. You are all inspiring!

So what is the Lucid Dream Lounge: It's a Lucid liquid surrealist mafia lounge. An environment similar to a 20's and 40's speakeasy dinner theatre with a fantasy masquerade theme. Pin stripe suits and period clothing highly recommended, we want to see your creatures masks or not . We are talking swanky singers on pianos, a human creature zoo, a wicked geisha Japanese tea ceremony, stilt walkers, puppet show, delicious belly dancing, a naughty acrobalance troupe, amazing fire performance from a lovely pair of witches to torch your soul, aerial performances, an art showing, a fashion show from some of the most talented local designers ( you might even get a chance to see up close since the models will be interacting with the crowd after the balcony runway tease), sound installations, goblins, gargoyles, fairies, and much more . All performances will happen in various places throughout the crowd, not just on stage but right with the spectators. Come play.............Creature. The dinner is a buffet served artistically on fairie flesh (VIP) only. Join these tempting creatures at the table and have a taste of living art.

Fire Dancing Classes with KFire and Leticia

Starting in the end of June, Kfire and Leticia will be teaching a series of fun and affordable fire dancing classes at Cell Space. Cell Space is a non-profit, community arts center located in the Mission District of San Francisco. The classes will cover beginner, intermediate, and advanced poi (fire chains) techniques.

Each series of classes is made up of a total of 6, 90-minute sessions on Tuesdays 7:00 – 8:30 PM.

The classes run from June 28th to August 2nd.

Cost of classes:
Beginning Fire Dancing $45 enrollment, $20 materials fee* (fire poi)
Intermediate/Advanced Fire Dancing $45 enrollment, $10 materials fee*

*Students should bring their own practice poi, or purchase a pair from the instructor for an additional $10.

Registration begins May 16th and ends June 20th.
